The Faculty of Dental Surgery of The
Royal College of Surgeons of England was established in 1947.
There are two other Faculties of Dental Surgery in the UK, one based at The
Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the other a part of The
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow
There is also a
Faculty of Dentistry which is a part of The
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
In 2006 an agreement to merge the Faculty of Dental Surgery with the
Faculty of General Dental Practice of the same college was agreed by the councils of both faculties, but when the proposal was put to the faculty's members and fellows it was overwhelmingly rejected.
Postgraduate qualifications
The faculty can grant Postgraduate qualifications to dentists, including the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the
Royal College of Surgeons of England (
MFDS) (currently being phased out), the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties at The Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF) (currently being phased in), the Diploma in
Dental Public Health, Diploma in
Special Care Dentistry, the Membership in
Restorative Dentistry and the Membership in
Surgical Dentistry.
